Comeback Medvedev Wins Maiden Trophy in Over Two Years

19 of Daniil Medvedev's twenty-one titles have been earned on hardcourt

A comeback Medvedev claimed his maiden championship for nearly 30 months with victory over opponent Moutet in the competition title decider.

The athlete, a ex- world number one, has experienced a challenging season, managing just one match at the major tournaments and suffering a difficult moment at the US Open.

Medvedev's unpredictability on the tennis tour - and issues with his serve in particular - led to him exiting of the world's top 10 and finally separating with long-time trainer Cervara.

Now training with his coach and Rohan Goetzke, he has consistently progressed in the recent weeks - peaking in a closely contested competitive victory over challenger Moutet.

This represents Medvedev's first title following the 2023 Rome Masters and first on a hard surface after March of 2023.

The win also means the Russian has secured twenty-one championships at 21 various events.

"It's the first time I'm at a event with my two daughters simultaneously, so to win a trophy is really nice," commented world number 14 the champion.

"This championship is in honour of my younger daughter her name, because the first title I won when my first daughter her name was born was for her."

The athlete, the former major winner, had failed in his previous six championship matches, including in the German tournament earlier this year.

The player's retrieving strategy and regular outbursts on the playing surface had led observers to wonder if his skill to perform at the elite level was finished.

However the 29-year-old has made changes in recent weeks, striving to come to the net and play assertively, supported by an improved serve.

He came back from a deficit in the opening set against the challenging opponent, taking four of the last five games to take the lead.

The competitors traded breaks in the second set before the Frenchman, attempting for his maiden tour championship, seized the initiative to push for a third set.

The opponent defended four initial chances in a close final set before Medvedev broke to fifteen to serve for the match.

Appropriately, he clinched the title with a point at the net, with his opponent incapable to manage a return after a lengthy match.
