Cowboys Proprietor Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Offensive Signal toward Fans

The NFL has levied a hefty $250,000 fine on Dallas Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he claims was an “unintentional” offensive hand signal directed at attendees during a Sunday’s game at the Jets’ stadium.

Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, but Jones insists he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team secured a 37-22 victory.

“It was unfortunate. That was essentially an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a large group of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, our fans. The whole venue was brimming with excitement for the Dallas team.”

Jones additionally clarified that the signal was completely accidental, happening amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply put up the incorrect digit,” he noted. “It was accidentally done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected rapidly.”

Historical Precedent for Proprietor Fines

This incident isn’t the first time an league proprietor has been penalized for misconduct. Previous examples involve:

  • Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at fans in early 2024.
  • Former Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.

Jones, who is known for his publicity flair, possesses an estimated wealth of around $16bn, so the fine easily payable for the billionaire proprietor.

Recent Issues and Media Attention

The incident comes after a contentious preseason for Jones, who faced widespread backlash from the Dallas supporters after the team dealt star pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

Moreover, Jones was a central figure in a streaming series that examined his influence in developing the Cowboys into the world’s most valuable sports franchise, even with its recent title shortcomings.

The league’s action to penalize Jones highlights its continuing initiative to maintain professional conduct among all team officials, regardless of their status or financial standing.
