Heroic Train Employee Receives Life-Threatening Injuries During Multiple Stabbing Incident on Express Train
A courageous train staff member who stepped in to protect travelers during a multiple knife attack on a express train has sustained life-threatening wounds, police confirmed on Sunday.
Particulars of the Terrifying Event
Surveillance video reportedly depicts the staff member attempting to stop the assailant as the train journeyed between Peterborough and Huntingdon in the county. Witnesses described a frightening 14-minute duration after the train left Peterborough, with bloodied passengers fleeing through compartments.
The suspect, a 32-year-old British national from Peterborough, is in detention for questioning. Authorities announced a significant incident on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in downtown London.
Crisis Response and Aftermath
The incident on Saturday night led to 11 people being treated in hospital after the train made an unplanned stop at platform 2 in Huntingdon. Several individuals have now been released from medical care.
A bystander filmed the individual waving a large knife and being shot with a Taser as he faced officers on the platform. He was reportedly heard yelling, "End my life, kill me."
“This was a horrific attack that has had a wide impact. We are thinking of the victims and their families – especially the brave employee of rail staff whose relatives are being assisted by specialist officers,” said a senior law enforcement officer.
Labor Response and Appeals for Measures
Rail associations were swift to commend staff and demand increased measures. A labor leader stated he would be “seeking urgent meetings with government, train companies and law enforcement to guarantee that we have the strongest available assistance, tools and robust procedures in operation”.
Another union representative encouraged the rail company and government “to move quickly to review security, to support the impacted workers, and to make sure nothing like this occurs again”.
Operator Praised for Rapid Thinking
The train driver who stopped the train at Huntingdon was described as being “deeply affected” but “good”, and has been commended by union officials for doing “precisely what was needed”.
“He did not stop the train in the center of two stations where it’s clearly difficult for the emergency services to access, but he continued going until he arrived to Huntingdon, where the assistance was almost already there,” stated a association official.
Additional Information
Authorities stated they received the initial distress calls at 7:39 pm, and the service was forced to make an unplanned stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.
One witness described at first thinking if the situation was a holiday joke, but soon understood from people's expressions that it was serious.
Police have stated there is no evidence to indicate the incident was a terrorist attack and have requested the public to come forward with any further information.
Rail operations on the impacted line are expected to have disruption until the following day, with passengers advised to postpone their journeys where feasible.
