Platform Protection

The video-sharing app has defended its content review process, during debate over intentions to lay off hundreds of review team members in the UK. It is expected to reduce a significant number of roles in its user protection department in its British office, with trade unions and digital protection specialists voicing alarm that staff are being displaced by AI moderation.

A senior executive clarified that people-led review would remain essential, but automated tools can shield workers by removing the most harmful content prior to it has to be seen by staff. TikTok reported a 76% decrease in explicit and harmful content handled by content reviewers over the previous year due to the use of its machine learning processes.

“We think that it’s essential to balance humans and technology to ensure user safety,” the executive stated. “We’ll have staff as involved in the system, but we also think it’s very important to minimize viewing of harmful content as rapidly, which is the area in which a lot of the machine support is making a difference work at speed.”
